During the second half of the 19th Century, Don Andrés Brugal Montaner, a Spanish national who had migrated to Santiago de Cuba, decided to move to the Dominican Republic and take up permanent residence in Puerto Plata, a beautiful coastal city located in the northern part of the country. While in Cuba, Don Andrés acquired expertise in the making of rum, and it was based on that experience that he founded Brugal & Co. in Puerto Plata. It would mark the beginning of a long family tradition. Don Andrés, unknowingly, would become the forebear of entrepreneurial leadership in Dominican society. His working philosophy was conveyed to ensuing generations, thus becoming the spiritual axis which guides corporate actions in every area of development.

Basically, Brugal is the name and the brand of a variety of rums of surpassingly good quality. And yet, the enterprise spreads out to other areas, namely livestock, agriculture, ecology, veterinarian and pharmaceutical products, distribution of renowned international liquors and alcoholic beverages, hardware store, production of other alcoholic beverages and patronage of institutions engaged in social work.

More than one hundred years elapsed since Don Andrés Brugal Montaner founded this business, sustained on a tradition of innovation, originality, hard work and quality. During this time, Brugal has developed in an outstanding manner, expanding its capacity for the distilling, ageing and production of its rums, while transforming its internal structures to make them responsive to present time demands.

In recent years, Brugal has begun to penetrate new markets and to strengthen its presence in the United States, with the purpose of increasing its exports and ensuring continued growth. The initiative has borne fruits and in a short time we have seen our sales grow, both in North America as well as in Spain, Italy and the Caribbean Islands, while we have begun to approach new markets in Europe and Latin America. Globalization has allowed us to reformulate our corporate vision, building upon values that would enable us to successfully reach the 21st Century.

Brugal was born during the last century, it has journeyed through the 20th Century with growing success and is firmly heading forward, to address the challenges of the forthcoming century and millenium with optimism.

In Puerto Plata, a beautiful city located in the northern part of the country, which is also one of the major tourist centers, Brugal has its factories where the rums are produced. The distribution and marketing offices are located in the capital city of Santo Domingo, and there is also a regional office in Santiago de los Caballeros, the second most important city in the Dominican Republic. We supply the market with five varieties of rum, each with a distinctive personality. These rums embody the essence of the Dominican spirit. Brugal has three distillings, one in Puerto Plata and two in San Pedro de Marconis.

The company was probalby established in 1888.

George Arzeno Brugal, former head of Dominican Republic’s biggest rum maker, passed away early Friday in Tampa, Florida.

Don Georgy, as he was known, had left the country last week after taking part in the Government-sponsored talks to deal with the effects of the global economic crisis.

He was the president of the rum and beverage company Brugal, founded in 1888.

In February last year the famous distilling company Edrington announced its purchaser of 83% of the Brugal company shares for 400 million dollars.
