Pleystowe Sugar Mill, Mackay

History

The mill was completed in August and the first crushing commenced on 6 September 1869. The first season yielded 143 tons of sugar and 6000 gallons of rum which was sent to Alexandra for distillation until the Pleystowe distillery was completed. The distillery commenced operation in 1872 and the quality of the Pleystowe rum was well known in the district. In 1872-1873, Pleystowe produced 18,221 gallons of rum.

The Pleystowe distillery closed after the 1894 season to make way for the new machinery.
