Palomino & Vergara, Jerez

History

In 1765, a man named Palomino settled in Jerez and became a winemaker. Around the same time, three brothers named Juan, Bartolome and Mateo Vergara y Vegas from El Puerto de Santa Maria merged with the British firm to become Vergara & Dickson. This company prospered and moved to Jerez. Later the name of the company was changed to Juan Vicente Vergara. At the beginning of the 20th century, the two firms merged under the name Palomino & Vergara.

In 1963, the Rumasa company bought the Palomino & Vergara, and for the next 20 years or so everything went quite well. In 1983 Rumasa was expropriated by the government and its subsidiary companies were sold. Harveys bought Palomino and Vergara in 1985 and, along with the constant restructuring of multinationals, sold the Dios Baco wine business in 1992 to Paez Morillo, who went on to found Bodegas Dios Baco, and sold the Fino Tio Mateo brand to Grupo Estevez in 1993.

Very little remains of P&V now. The P&V name has disappeared from the labels, where it is now listed as the producer of Real Tesoro.
