History
Wholly Bajan-owned, 17th-century Hopefield estate and the third-largest blender and bottler in Barbados. Raw rum is currently bought from the West Indies Rum Distillery, but a distillery of their own was commissioned in 1996. Acquired Alleyne Arthur & Hunte in 1993.
After months of planning and intense work, David Seale, a household name in local business, has given Barbados a wonderful birthday gift.
On November 17, Seale officially opened his Rum Refinery and Heritage Park at the Foursquare Factory, St. Philip.
Opened on the eve of the country's 30th Anniversary of Independence on November 30, the facility offers Barbados an opportunity to link tourism and manufacturing, two key sectors of the local economy.
Not only that, but it has given Barbados a high rating as a 21st century rum producing country. "This Rum distillery...represents our goal of bringing Barbadian rum-distilling screaming with pride into the 21st century," Seale told the opening ceremony attended by a number of dignitaries headed by Deputy Prime Minister, Ms. Billie Miller.
"And the marriage of a rum-distilling facility with the art and culture of my fellow-citizens is not without deliberate doing," he added.
The facility offers another attraction for visitors to Barbados, especially in light of the emphasis being placed on heritage tourism. At the same time it adds greater depth to the local rum industry which earns foreign exchange annually for the country. Small craftspeople are also given an opportunity to display and sell craft from a number of exciting locations at the new complex.
Ms. Miller addressed the opening ceremony, while Mrs. Beverly Arthur, wife of Prime Minister Owen Arthur, cut the ribbon to open the facility.
It is the first all new Rum Distillery built in Barbados this century. There is an adjoining Heritage Park which showcases Barbadian skills and talent. It features an Art Gallery, an Amphitheatre and an array of shops with exclusively locally-made products.
The entire complex is a great work of art which Seale attributes to many people including architect Peter Burke."I believe I can rightfully say Peter has produced here at Foursquare features of architecture to the service of work, the arts and the humanity," Seale remarked.
For him the Rum Factory and Heritage Park will stand out as among his greatest marks of form, beauty, style, and functional design he has yet rendered.
The work of Steven Goodridge, the distillery manager, Steven Goodridge, Douglas "McGyver" and Richard Seale came in for high praise. Seale also lauded the support of his wife Anne.
Foursquare Factory was closed in 1984 as part of the rationalisation of the sugar industry.
Now the site of this once important facility has been transformed and will offer Barbados even more economic success in the years ahead.

The Foursquare Distillery manufacturing Doorly's, E.S.A Field and Old Brigand rums and Falernum.
Aging in ex-cherry butts made from European oak is rare in rum production, although the relentlessly innovative Richard Seale does "finish" his Doorly's XO blend for a short period in sherry butts and is experimenting with Madeira drums and French oak. If handled correctly, this procedure, now widely used in malt whiskey, can add subtle layers of the flavor of sherry (or port, Madeira, wine, etc.) to the finished rum. Leave it too long, however, and the flavors end up dominating proceedings.
