The Rhum Rhum distillery was created in Marie-Galante as part of a project launched in 2004 by Vittorio Giani Capovilla—a Veneto brandy and grappa distiller—and Luca Gargano—head of the Genoese importer and bottler Velier. Housed for a long time at Bielle, the distillery uses a pot still designed by Andreas Muller to produce rhum agricole from local varieties of sugarcane. The rums are then aged in bourbon casks and large French wine barrels.

In 2004, Luca Gargano brought Gianni Capovilla to Marie-Galante with the intention of convincing him to produce “the best agricole rum in the world.” Gianni Capovilla, widely regarded as an undisputed expert in spirits, accepted the challenge and installed a still at the Bielle distillery in 2005. A second still was added in 2007, before operations moved to the Poisson distillery. The first bottle of Rhum Rhum PMG Rhum Agricole Blanc was released in 2008. Marie-Galante, whose history is tied to the cultivation of sugarcane, has preserved varieties that have disappeared elsewhere. Rhum Rhum is produced from these very cane varieties.
