History
1936: Bacardi y Companía was established by the Bacardi family in Puerta de Tierra.
1959 Bacardi y Companía was moved to Catano.
Bacardi noted that Puerto Rican rums didn't incur any U.S. import duties - unlike the rum the company was making in Cuba. Soon, a small plant had been built on the site of an old Spanish jail in San Juan in 1936, saving Bacardi $1 a bottle on import duty.
In 1958, Bacardi opened its massive distillery in Catano: a clear statement of the firm's ambition. All U.S. sold Bacardi is made here, generating huge revenues for the Puerto Rican government and the rum publicity campaign.
In the 1980's, the company developed and patented the Bacardi Corporation Anaerobic Water Filter Treatment System. The process, which takes place in two state-of-the-art, 3.5 million gallon waste disposal digesters, uses micro-organisms to "eat" the waste material left from the distillation process. During the process, the micro-organisms give off a usable clearer gas (mostly methane) which provides about 70% of the total energy needs of the distillery while reducing its dependence on oil.
