History
It was in the year 1846 that Gottfried Fassbind I. founded the "Alte Urschwyzer" distillery in Oberarth. More than 160 years ago this descendant of Dutch coopers who had emigrated to Switzerland in the 13th century thus laid the foundation for what is now Switzerland’s oldest distillery.
Since then the original craft of master distiller has been passed down through five generations. In the best family tradition and in the unmistakable, original spirit of the founder. Here’s a brief anecdote from the early days:
When in 1860 the Canton of Schwyz planned to drive a road through the family’s magnificent cherry plantation, Gottfried Fassbind put up successful resistance. A tight, almost right-angled bend – referred to by locals as the "cherry brandy twist" – bears witness to this determined attitude.
What Gottfried I. Fassbind I already exemplified a century-and-a-half ago still characterises the fine schnapps produced by the Fassbind distillery today. These are time-honoured Swiss values such as quality and tradition, firmly rooted in nature.
From Kirsch to Vieille Poire, from robust Pflümli to Brut de Fût Pomme, all fine schnapps from Fassbind bring a breath of Switzerland on to the table. Fruit and berries cultivated in Switzerland are supplied by local fruit farmers and are carefully sorted and processed by us in our distillery using traditional methods. We thus create the basis for the high-class schnapps which have been awarded gold medals over the years, for example by Napoleon III.
Original, authentic properties are the characteristic features of fruit brandies from Fassbind. Today, just as 160 years ago.
