History
Platanico Wines & Spirits traces its origins back to 1922 when its founder Christodoulos Platanis undertook the responsibility of producing wines and spirits on behalf of his former employer N.H.TAVERNARIS FRERES. During his 10 year tenure as production supervisor for N.H.TAVERNARIS FRERES Mr. Platanis became versed with the traditional methods of wine and spirit production, techniques that he transferred to his newly founded company Chr. Platanis and Co Ltd. In 1937 Mr. Platanis founded the first brewery in Cyprus. Leon, a premium lager, became a household name. For his efforts in the advancement of brewery, Mr. Platanis has proudly been named the father of the brewing industry in Cyprus.
In 1958 the company was renamed to M. Chr. Platanis and Co Ltd while in 1967 it was renamed to it present name Platanico Wines & Spirits Ltd. In 1988 the company was relocated to its new manufacturing site near Latsia village 8 kilometers to the south of Nicosia. Since then Platanico Wines & Spirits has expanded its operations beyond the boundaries of Cyprus. Moreover, the explosive growth of tourism in Cyprus which exceeds the two million mark has lead to the expansion of the domestic operations of the company to include the import of related products for the tourist industry.
Today, the company enjoys a leading position in the local market in the areas of vinegar production and distribution.
Cognizant of the efforts of Cyprus to enter the European Union and in preparation for the new millennium Platanico Wines & Spirits has embarked in a process of modernization and expansion while at the same time honoring its long standing tradition in its areas of the wine and spirits production.
