History

Company was established on November 17, 1966.

Their own distillery was established on 1989.

Suriname Alcoholic Beverages NV (formerly Surinamese Alcohol Company and popularly known as SAB) was established on 17 november 1966 and started initially with the bottling and distribution of rum and sugar products whose raw materials were supplied by the sugarestate Mariënburg, Commewijne. In the year 1973 SAB signed a cooperation agreement with the in Bordeaux Peyrelongue France-based company Hanappier & Co.. S.A. (Calvet SA), for the manufacture of the well-known Hanappier Eau de Vie.

SAB grew very rapidly into a leading industrial company that not only manufactured rum and alcoholic products, but also forsaw the entire pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries of spirit alcohol.

SAB has received several international honors and awards for its rum since its establishment.

In the year 1977 the famous Black Cat Rum was honored in Luxembourg with the prestigious "Monde Selection Médaille d'Or" or gold medal. Through this first major international success the company grew rapidly in size and prestige and the Black Cat was the national pride of Suriname. Also abroad Black Cat acquired acknowledgement, and became an understanding in the Dutch spirits market.

In the year 1978 another SAB rum was awarded in Geneva, Switzerland with the Medal Monde Selection d'Or. This time the honours went to Poker Rum, a dark rum who later developed the familiar Borgoe Rum.

Borgoe Extra Rum was awarded in the year 2003 with the "Best Rum Award" in Tokyo, Japan and the "Monde Selection d'Bronze Medal" in Brussels in the year 2004. Borgoe Extra Rum was judged by an international jury on quality, presentation, taste and purity.

In the year 1999, the shares of the "Surinaamse Cultuurmaatschappij NV" (Mariënburg) were handed over to the Trinidad-based alcoholcompany: Angostura Ltd.

In the same year, a new, advanced and fully automatic bottleline was taken into use.

With further investment and strategic alliances, the market value of the company was steadily increasing and the competitiveness of the SAB rums grew both nationally and internationally.

In 2004, SAB and its subsidiary, SAB Distribution, certified under the international quality standard ISO 9001:2000.

SAB is well aware of its role as a national producer of alcohol and alcoholic products in Suriname. From its social responsibility SAB will continue to provide a continuous contribution to the Surinamese society. SAB has made it her mission to make use of the national resources in a responsible way.
