Julije Hühn – A Prominent Printer in Zagreb

Julije Hühn (1829–1896) was a prominent lithographer, printer, and publisher active in Zagreb (then known as Agram) during the second half of the 19th century. Originally from Germany, he settled in the Croatian capital, where he played a key role in the development of the printing industry.

Hühn's printing house was one of the most significant in the region, specializing in high-quality lithographs, books, newspapers, and commercial prints. His mastery of the printing craft ensured that his products were characterized by exceptional detail and precision. Among his clients were important institutions, publishers, and businesspeople.

In addition to standard printed materials, Hühn was also involved in producing labels for alcoholic beverages, including rum labels. Some of these bear the signature "Jul. Hühn, Agram.", confirming their origin from his printing house. Today, these labels are valuable collector's items and serve as important artifacts of 19th-century printing craftsmanship.

Beyond his printing activities, Hühn was also a publisher. He released newspapers such as Agramer Wochenblatt and Vrebac, which had a significant impact on journalism in the region.

Julije Hühn was one of the most important printers of his time in Croatia. His work influenced the printing industry not only in Zagreb but also throughout Central Europe. Labels bearing his name are now rare reminders of the high-quality craftsmanship of the late 19th century.
