News item in the newspaper Banater Deutsche Zeitung, 1.3.1929
English: Drinks adulterated with methyl alcohol in Timișoara? The major investigation launched in the capital into spirits prepared with methyl alcohol, which have led to the deaths of countless residents, many of whom died, has also extended its reach to Timișoara. At the end of last week, a raid was carried out in all liquor factories in our city to determine whether they, too, were producing their drinks with methyl alcohol. Prosecutor Nicolau and Inspector General of Finance Anastasiu also found several bottles of cognac and liqueur in the Josefov district of the Banat Rum and Liqueur Factory, which they believe contained methyl alcohol. The spirits in question were confiscated and handed over to the local chemical testing laboratory, which will determine through analysis whether they actually contain methyl alcohol. The management of the Banat Rum and Liqueur Factory offered in their defense that they produce the liqueurs from pure alcohol with the aid of essences. The company sources its essences from the Bucharest firm Steuer and Friedländer, which was all the less suspected of containing methyl alcohol in its essences, given that one of its directors was elected president of the Romanian Liqueur Manufacturers' Association last year. The results of the analysis are expected to be released this afternoon. They are being awaited with great interest in the circles of liqueur manufacturers and innkeepers.
