The local spirit in Thailand is technically rum, since it is made from sugar residue and rice, but most Thai consumers mistake it for whisky (original whisky is made from malted barley). In order to end this confusion, the Excise Department and Thailand's Industrial Standards are working on setting standard specifications to clearly define types of liquor.
